Change to the Law on Armenian Citizenship

Change to the Law on Armenian Citizenship

IMPORTANT NOTICE

With the amendment to the law on Armenian citizenship adopted on December 6, 2017, a new provision was established for children of Armenian descent. Previously, for a child under 18 to acquire Armenian citizenship, at least one of the parents had to be an Armenian citizen. In practice, there were cases where children of Armenian descent settled in Armenia, but their parents were not Armenian citizens and wanted to obtain Armenian citizenship for their child. The law did not allow this.

According to the amendment, even if both parents are not Armenian citizens, a child of Armenian descent residing in Armenia can have their parents apply for an Armenian passport for them.
