Canadian Citizen Sentenced to Death in China
Today, the Chinese court in Dalian has sentenced Canadian citizen Robert Schellenberg to death for drug trafficking. In 2014, Schellenberg was arrested on suspicion of attempting to smuggle 222 kilograms of methamphetamine from China to Australia, reportedly hidden in rubber tires.
The Canadian maintains that he was in China strictly for tourism and became a victim of criminals.
On November 20, the Dalian court initially sentenced the Canadian to 15 years in prison, followed by extradition to his home country. After appealing the verdict, he received an even harsher sentence.
Canadian media have already reported that this decision by the Chinese court could be linked to the scandal involving the arrest of Huawei's finance director in Canada.
