11:41 AM. 30 Years Since the Devastating Earthquake

On this day in 1988, December 7, a devastating earthquake struck the northern regions of the Republic of Armenia, with its epicenter located in the city of Spitak. The earthquake caused massive damage and destruction to thousands of buildings, leading to the deaths of tens of thousands of people. The Spitak earthquake occurred at 11:41 AM and 22.7 seconds, with a magnitude estimated at 10 on the Richter scale. It is classified as a complete cycle earthquake, consisting of foreshocks, the main shock, and aftershocks.

The quake affected approximately 40% of Armenia's territory, home to around 1 million people. The disaster zone, where the earthquake's intensity reached 8 or more, spanned an area of 3,000 square kilometers. As a result of the earthquake, 21 cities and regions were affected, and 342 villages were damaged. A staggering 514,000 people were made homeless, and nearly 20,000 individuals suffered varying degrees of injury, with 12,500 requiring hospitalization. The total number of fatalities reached 25,000, with the majority of casualties occurring in Gyumri (approximately 15-17 thousand) and Spitak (4 thousand).

The earthquake destroyed 17% of the entire residential fund in Armenia, led to the closure of 170 industrial enterprises, and caused significant harm to villages and the agro-industrial complex. Architectural, historical, and artistic monuments also suffered extensive damage, affecting 917 centers of cultural heritage. Through the joint efforts of the population and rescue teams, more than 45,000 individuals were rescued from the rubble, with 12,500 hospitalized.
